New Sunn 0))) Album
On November 2nd, 2009, Sunn 0))) will release their 7th studio album. Sunn 0))) is one of those bands that I love to like. I don’t really like them like I like other bands. I don’t put Sunn 0))) on the CD player in the car and rock out. I may put it on in the car, but mostly I listen to the vinyl albums. I’ve seen them once, and it was a great show, but really I’ve seen better.
What I love about Sunn 0))) is the art. An impressionist painting feels different from, say, a surrealist painting, and they are enjoyed differently. I find Sunn 0))) to be more abstract, more impressionist. Sunn 0))) is best enjoyed alone and in the mood for something dark and depressing, and sometimes a little annoying, maybe even angry and frustrating. It’s not easy to listen to Sunn 0))). I wouldn’t relax to a Sunn 0))) album and a glass of wine, but maybe a glass of whiskey and a Sandman comic book.
Sunn 0))) isn’t for every day listening. It’s for it’s own special time. It’s not anything in particular, besides lots of distorted guitars. It is tone. It is deep guitar tone. It asks too much of the listener by it’s tone.
Sunn 0))) is art, art more than rock, art more than music. Sunn 0))) is an expression, an impression of deep guitar tone. Wearing a Sunn 0))) t-shirt means you enjoy the deepest rock, like wearing a shirt that says you like the bottom of the ocean while everyone else enjoys the waves on top of the water. It’s meant for deep music aficionados. It is a 95+ rated cigar, that no one but deep cigar aficionados would be able to discern the difference.
